“Music for 2 Radios” or “M42R” is an ongoing community based sound art project. At its core, Music for 2 Radios is an evolving musical composition that is split into two separate parts. Each part is broadcast simultaneously on two separate public radio stations. By then synchronizing the two radio station signals, the music reveals itself, live on the air, each part on a different frequency. To experience the music, audiences tune in with two separate FM radios. This project relies on the participation of two local community radio stations in a given city. Participating audiences are by default creating a sound installation in their city by tuning in with two radios, via their cars, their clock radios, home stereo, boom boxes etc.
The ephemeral nature of this project, the idea that it exists on two public radio waves simultaneously combined into one for a short period – demands a small effort of the part of the public. That is, to find two FM radios. What makes "Music for 2 radios" so special is that it touches on many aspects of new music, contemporary electronic music, audio art, sound installation, and community art. It manifests itself as an entirely analogue performance, it is also entirely free when it is performed - thus a very inclusive democratic music experience. Its alternative use of the ubiquitous medium of radio, a medium we all know so well, makes for a transparent new music project.
